Lecture 1: Epistemic/Non-Epistemic Dependence

Speaker: Prof. Nick Zangwill (Ferens Chair, Department of Philosophy, University of Hull, UK)

Time: 10-12, A.M., Wednesday, Mar. 01, 2017

Place: Room 432, East 5 Building, HUST

Concerning the nature of knowledge, the traditional approach is “the necessary and sufficient conditions approach”, which is seen as obvious. But it is not quite obvious. A new approach, i.e., the dependence approach, is proposed.  Possible consequences of this approach are considered. Along this approach, one consequence is that the famous so called Gettier counter cases would not be a real threat to a theory of knowledge.  Another consequence is that multiple realization of knowledge would be both plausible and natural…  All welcome!

The lecture series is supported by:

HUST “Two First-Rates” High-level Foreign Experts Indraught Project;
HUST “Thirteenth Five-year” Key Project of University Culture Brands Construction: Yujia Mountain Philosophy Forum.
